God Working for You

Greetings, fellow disciples of Jesus,

God is working for you.

Now, perhaps that needs some clarifying. God is not working for you in the sense that you’re the one calling the shots; that He’s at your beck and call doing your bidding. It’s not that you are the boss and God is your employee, just waiting for your direction.

But make no mistake. God is working for you.

That is, God is working on your behalf, in your best interest. St. Paul writes, “We know that in everything God works for good with those who love him, who are called according to his purpose” (Romans 8:28). Most of this work goes completely unnoticed by you. The psalmist observes that the LORD keeps watch over us day and night, neither slumbering nor sleeping. (see Psalm 121).

Perhaps one of the best narrative examples of this unnoticed, even hidden, work in the Old Testament is in the life of Joseph, son of Jacob. Late in his life, reflecting upon the hardships he suffered—mostly at the hands of his brothers—he had the eyes of faith to see God had been at work through it all: “Even though you intended to do harm to me, God intended it for good, in order to preserve a numerous people, as he is doing today” (Genesis 50:20). This story points ahead to the cross, where sinners intended to do the ultimate harm to Jesus, but in this very act God was working to redeem all sinners! This is astounding.

So whatever your day brings you—blessings and hardships, joys and trials—you, too, can find consolation and confidence in the knowledge that in everything God is working for you.

Giving thanks for you, in the name of Jesus,
Pastor Mike
